Replace missing teeth in Bristol

Dental bridges to restore missing teeth

Dental-bridgeDental bridges are a form of restoration which can be used to replace missing teeth. Missing teeth can cause a variety of problems, including impaired speech, difficulty in chewing, an increasing risk of oral health problems and can seriously affect the aesthetics of the smile.

There are different types of dental bridges, including:

  • Traditional fixed bridge: This is comprised of a false tooth (known as a pontic) which is fused to two crowns. Fixed bridges are anchored to the neighbouring existing teeth and can also be supported by dental implants.
  • Maryland bridge: This is often used to replace a missing front tooth and is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap using metal bands. This type of bridge is used when the neighbouring teeth are strong and healthy.
  • Cantilever bridge: This is used when there are healthy teeth on only one side of the gap. The bridge is anchored by one or two healthy teeth on one side of the missing tooth.

The procedure

Fitting a dental bridge is relatively straightforward. The bridge is custom-made by our dental laboratory for the individual based on impressions taken of the teeth. The teeth are then trimmed and prepared and the bridge is fixed into place using dental cement. We always test out the bridge with you before it is permanently fitted to ensure you are completely happy with the look and fit.

Cared for properly by maintaining good oral hygiene, dental bridges can last up to 15 years.
